# 1. 후회, 어차피, 게다가

I should've picked up another one.    (후회를 나타내는 표현)

I didn't know(think) you would be there (too)    (know - 정보, think - 내 판단 / too 가 추가되면 너'도' 여기 있을 줄 몰랐다)

 

No, it's OK

I was about to leave anyway. (was about to 는 "이제 막" 좀 더 절묘한 타이밍에 대한 표현)

(I was going to leave anyway)

#2. 현재로서는 이게 최선

차를 사려고 알아보고 있는 중이에요

개인적으로는 SUV 처럼 큰 차를 좋아하지만, 지금은 그건 좀 어려울 것 같아요

중고시장을 알아보는 방법도 있지만 그럴 경우 결함이 있는 것을 사게 될 위험이 있어요

제가 차를 잘 몰라서요

그래서 현재로서 가장 좋은 것은 새 경차를 사는 거에요

작긴하겠지만 그래도 새거일테니까요

 

I'm looking to buy a car. 

Personally, I prefer bigger cars like SUVs but I just can't swing it right now.

I could look into the second hand market. But then I would have to risk getting a faulty one

because I don't really know cars. 

So, at the moment, I think my best option is to get a new subcompact car.

It'll be small but at least it'll be new

I can't swing it : I can't afford it 보다 조금더 casual 한 표현 (~할 여유가 없어)

I could do somghing : 내가 원하기만 하면 (마음만 먹으면 그렇게 할 수 있다)

but then : 그랬을 경우에는

I would have to risk doing something : ~할 위험을 감수해야 한다

At the moment, I think my best option is ~ : 현재로서는 최선은 

 

저는 제 강아지들 때문에 길게 여행다녀오는게 쉽지 않아요.

그들을 대신 돌봐줄 수 있는 사람이 주변에 없거든요

펫 호텔에 묵게 하는 방법도 있긴 하지만, 그러면 그들을 모르는 사람한테 맡겨 놓고 나만 놀러가는게 불안할 것 같아요

그래서 더 좋은 방법을 찾을 때까지는 강아지들을 데리고 짧게 여행을 다녀오는 수 밖에 없어요

 

It's not easy for me to go on long trips becase of my dogs.

I don't know anyone who can look after them for me.

I could have them stay at a pet boarding facility but then I wouldn't feel safe about leaving them behind with a stranger while I'm out having fun.

So, until I can find a better way, I can only go on short trips and take my dogs with me.

 

could : 마음만 먹으면 그렇게 할 수 있지만

would : ~ 할 것 같다 

leave them behind with a stranger 

I can only do somthing : ~ 할 수 밖에 없다

 

#3 It could be 표현 

 

3-1 ~ 일 수도 있다

네 말이 맞을 수도 있겠다

You could be right about that

내 말이 틀릴 수도 있어

I could be wrong

I could be wrong about that

 

3-2 It could be that + (full sentence 사실일 수도 있는 내용)

 

Example1)

Of course, she might(could) just be tired 

-> It could be that she's just tired

 

Example2)

I don't know what's wrong with my cat

She's just been lying around all day not doing much

So I'm thinking of taking her to the vet later today

It could be that she's just tired, but I don't know

I don't want to take any risks (chances)

 

※ 조동사 + have + pp 표현의 절반 가까이를 It could be that + full sentence 로 표현 가능

 

Example3)

그 사람이 까먹었을 수도 있으니까 네가 연락을 해봐

 

He might(could) have just forgotten. So just call him

연락해봐 그사람이 까먹었을 수도 있느니까

 

Call him because he could've (might've) just forgotten

-> Call him. It could be that he just forgot

 

Example4)

걔가 그냥 겁이 났던 것일 수도 있어

He might've(could've) just been afraid (scared)

He might've(could've) just gotten scared

-> It could be that he was just scared

-> It could be that he was just nervous

 

※ (주의) It could be that + full sentence 로 대체 안되는 예 (가정법 표현)

단순히 상황에 대해 해석을 하면서 추측하는 것이 아니고, 가정을 하는 상황이므로

If I had studied harder when I was a student, I could've gotten a better job

 

#4 (최근의 변화를 인지하고 있는 상황에서) 안부 묻기

 

 

4-1 (상대방이 힘든 시간이 겪고 있는 것을 알고 있을 때, 걱정하는 뉘앙스)  요즘 좀 어때?

How are you holding up ?

 

4-2 (이사, 이직, 이민처럼 새로운 환경에서 적응하고 있는 사람에게 하는 안부 묻기)

How are you settling in?

 

4-3 (최근에 어떤 물건을 사서 쓰고 있다거나, 어떤 서비스를 이용하기 시작한 사람에게 묻는 안부)

(차를 샀다거나, 새로운 보모를 이용하고 있다거나, 의사를 바꿨다거나, 치료법을 바꿨다거나)

How is your new car working out for you?

How is the (your) new nanny working our for you?

How is the (your) new doctor working out for you?

How is the therapy working out for you?

 

4-4 (상대방과 최근에 사이가 안좋았던 제3자와 관계 회복에 대해 묻는 안부)

How are things with your wife (daughter) ?
